چکیده

Security of embedded devices today is a critical requirement for the Internet of Things (IoT) as these devices will access sensitive in formation such as social security numbers and health records. This makes these devices a lucrative target for attacks exploiting vulnerabilities to inject malicious code or reuse existing code to alter the execution of their software. Existing defense techniques have major drawbacks such as requiring source code or symbolic debugging information, and high overhead, limiting their applicability. In this paper we propose a novel defense technique, DisARM, that protects against both code-injection and code-reuse based buffer overflow attacks by breaking the ability for attackers to manipulate the return address of a function. Our approach operates on arbitrary executable binaries and thus does not require com piler support. In addition it does not require user interactions and can thus be automatically applied. Our experimental results show that our approach incurs low overhead and significantly increases the level of se curity against both code-injection and code-reuse based attacks.

Stack-Based Buffer Overflows in Harvard Class Embedded Systems

Many embedded devices used to control critical infrastructure assets are based on the Harvard architecture. This architecture separates data and program memory into independent address spaces, unlike the von Neumann architecture, which uses a single address space for data and program code. Buffer overflow attacks in desktop and server platforms based on the von Neumann model have been studied e...

Defending Embedded Systems Against Buffer Overflow via Hardware/Software

Buffer overflow attacks have been causing serious security problems for decades. With more embedded systems networked, it becomes an important research problem to defend embedded systems against buffer overflow attacks. In this paper, we propose the Hardware/Software Address Protection (HSAP) technique to solve this problem. We first classify buffer overflow attacks into two categories (stack s...

Poster Abstract: A Hardware-based Remote Attestation Protocol in Wireless Sensor Networks

Given the limited resources and computational power of current embedded sensor devices memory protection is difficult to achieve and generally unavailable. Hence, the buffer overflow that is used by the worm attacks in the Internet can be easily exploited to inject malicious code into Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). We designed a hardware-based remote attestation protocol to counter the buffer...

Statically Detecting Likely Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities

Buffer overflow attacks may be today’s single most important security threat. This paper presents a new approach to mitigating buffer overflow vulnerabilities by detecting likely vulnerabilities through an analysis of the program source code. Our approach exploits information provided in semantic comments and uses lightweight and efficient static analyses. This paper describes an implementation...

Monitoring Buffer Overflow Attacks: A Perennial Task

Buffer overflow (BOF) is a well-known, and one of the worst and oldest, vulnerabilities in programs. BOF attacks overwrite data buffers and introduce wide ranges of attacks like execution of arbitrary injected code. Many approaches are applied to mitigate buffer overflow vulnerabilities; however, mitigating BOF vulnerabilities is a perennial task as these vulnerabilities elude the mitigation ef...
